Las Temporadas Argentinas 1947 - 1948 - 1949 is a fabulous new hardcover book which describes in great detail the eleven Formula Libre races held in Argentina in the immediate postwar years and includes many rare photographs never before published. While the text covers the races in some detail with full results, this book is really about the wonderful photos, all perfectly reproduced in soft sepia tone. We have only 50 copies available, each signed and numbered by the author, Guillermo S. Iacona.

Argentina was one of the wealthiest countries in the world before World War II based on its massive agro-business exports which continued through the war years. After the war, motor racing enthusiast President Peron and his charismatic wife “Evita” supported the local Automobile Club in promoting a series of Formula Libre races around the country to which European cars and drivers were invited – a welcome trip to the Southern Hemisphere summer, away from the cold European winter.

In 1947 the Temporada series of three races attracted a number of Italian drivers such as Luigi Villoresi and Achille Varzi with prewar Alfa Romeos and Maseratis, plus Chico Landi from Brazil with his Tipo 308 Alfa Romeo, to compete against local drivers, such as Juan Manuel Fangio, in similar cars. For 1948 more European drivers were tempted to travel to Argentina by the weather, the starting money and the possibility that an outof-date racing car could be sold for hard currency before returning home. Varzi returned and was joined by “Nino” Farina, Jean-Pierre Wimille, Landi, Count Besana with a Ferrari 166 spider corsa and “Raph” with a Gordini for a series of four races. In 1949 more modern cars began to appear for the four races, spearheaded by Alberto Ascari and Villoresi with 4CLT/48 Maseratis, Farina with a 125/F1 supercharged Ferrari, Reg Parnell and Prince B. Bira with Maseratis and Wimille with a Gordini.

This lovely and enchanting volume has 235 pages with approximately 200 black and white photographs, plus drawings and reproductions of newspaper and magazine stories. The text is presented in both Spanish and English. Opening Las Temporadas Argentinas 1947 - 1948 - 1949 will begin a new adventure for you and we recommend it with great enthusiasm!
