| The front row: On pole is Rick Mears with Roger Penske's Penske PC10-Ford; in the middle is Kevin Cogan in another PC10 and on the outside is the always up there A. J. Foyt with a March-Cosworth. Cogan triggered a first lap accident that took out himself and three other cars; Rick Mears went on to finish second to Gordon Johncock and Foyt fell out with transmission failure. |
