The start of a dramatic race. Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss in the two Mercedes W196 bracket Alberto Ascari’s Lancia D50 as Eugenio Castellotti’s Lancia follows closely. Both Mercedes retired, as did Castellotti’s Lancia, while Ascari dramatically crashed at the Chicane and went into the harbor while in the lead, leaving the victory to Maurice Trintignant’s Ferrari 625/F1. Ascari was only shaken up by this ordeal, but was killed a few days later while testing a Ferrari sports car at Monza.
