| ‘Nino’ Farina pulled some great faces while putting out the effort! Here he is braking hard for a corner in his Alfa 158. This race marked the ascendancy of the “big” Lampredi-designed unblown Ferraris over the previously dominant supercharged 1.5 liter Alfa 158s. In practice Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi with the Ferraris grabbed the front row, but Villoresi crashed into the crowd with tragic results late in the race (Farina also spinning off and retiring his Alfa in an attempt to avoid Villoresi who was thrown into the road) and Ascari blew up while leading, leaving the win to Juan Manuel Fangio’s 158 with the similar cars of Toulo de Graffenried and Piero Taruffi following him home. |
