| Alfred Neubauer walking along the grid before the start. The Mercedes W154 to his right is the car driven by Hermann Lang which finished third overall behind the similar cars of Manfred von Brauchitsch and Rudi Caracciola. A lone Talbot was fourth many laps down as the only other finisher. Lang might have done better had he not lost 4 min. in the pits when his motor refused to fire after refueling. The Auto Union threat evaporated early with both Rudolf Hasse and Christian Kautz going off the road on the first lap! In practice Auto Union had appeared with a fully streamlined car (shades of Mercedes in 1954), but it was crashed by Hasse in practice. |
