Racing in Color is a fabulous all-color book from The Klemantaski Collection, with a text in English, French and Italian. We are now offering the leather-bound, signed and slipcased edition which is limited to 200 numbered copies.

When Peter Coltrin began his automotive career in Southern California in the mid 1950s, he began to take color photographs mostly at drag races, but also at the high speed meets at Bonneville and Muroc Dry Lake. In 1954 he joined up with the well known California hot-rodder, Ak Miller, as a crew member for Miller’s second run at the Carrera Panamericana. Again, Coltrin took his camera with him. As sports car racing grew in popularity, Coltrin began to attend those early races at places like Palm Springs, Pebble Beach and Willow Springs where more unusual color photographs were taken.

In 1957 Miller decided to try the Mille Miglia in Italy and Coltrin once again joined the team as a kind of all-around handyman and go-fer. After the Mille Miglia, Miller and Coltrin toured around to various Grand Prix and major sports car races. Coltrin fell in love with Europe and moved there permanently a year later, settling in Modena in central Italy, the home of Ferrari, Maserati and many other automobile racing workshops. Over the next 24 years, Peter Coltrin established himself as the most knowledgeable photojournalist in Italy and was “our man in Modena” for all his English-speaking colleagues.

Peter Coltrin become well-known and respected for his black and white photography, but his early color work, never published before, is truly outstanding. Racing in Color is designed to present a truly unique look at a classic period in motor sport for which very little color photography exists. The text and captions for Racing in Color were written by the famed motor racing historian Chris Nixon, who was himself a close friend of Peter Coltrin. Peter’s widow, Gabriella Coltrin, has added an emotional Foreword. We know you will enjoy Racing in Color.
