Just after start, the field approaches the south curve with Juan Manuel Fangio (Mercedes) and Froilán González (Ferrari) in front. González, despondent over the death in practice of his talented countryman, Onofre Marimon, eventually turned his car over to Mike Hawthorn who brought it into second place behind Fangio’s Mercedes.
