Alberto Ascari cornering hard in the Ferrari 340/F1, a car based on the chassis of the earlier 125/F1. Ferrari had first fielded a normally aspirated F.1 car, but of only 3.3 liters displacement, at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in June where it was considerably slower than the supercharged 1.5 liter Alfettas. After withdrawing following practice at the French Grand Prix and also at Bari, Ferrari fielded a pair of their new cars at Geneva where Luigi Villoresi drove the 275/F1, but Ascari had a new 4.1 liter model with considerably more power (it might even have been a 4.5). Both Ferraris made it onto the front row of the grid with Juan Manuel Fangio’s Alfa 159 and Ascari ran second to Fangio for much of the race before retiring. Villoresi crashed with tragic results as several spectators were killed and he himself was seriously injured. However, Ferrari had served notice that the Alfa domination would not last much longer. |
